Picture election night.
The votes are counted, the candidates are sweating, and the results are finally announced.
The winner?
Mickey Mouse.
Well, wouldn't that be interesting?
People really do write fictional characters onto election ballots. Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, and other imaginary candidates have appeared among write-in votes.
But there's a rather inconvenient problem.
To win an official election, a candidate generally needs to meet legal eligibility requirements. And fictional characters have a slight difficulty producing birth certificates, proving residency, or even demonstrating that they exist.
Election officials also have rules about which write-in votes can count. Simply receiving votes doesn't make a character an eligible candidate.
So while fictional characters have collected votes, we haven't established a verified example of one legally winning an official government office.
Which is a shame, really.
I'd quite like to see someone ask Mickey Mouse to explain his tax policy.
